What is Cyber Essentials, and why get it?
The scheme sets out five technical controls that protect against the most common cyber attacks. Passing it shows clients, insurers and public sector buyers that the basics are in place.
Passing needs board-approved policies together with well-managed IT: controlling and auditing access, keeping systems patched and keeping your security up to date.
What do the three levels of help mean?
Self-Service: you do the work with our preparation guide, and we run a precheck on your answers before you submit.
Assisted and Managed add the Cyber Essentials toolkit and consultancy time (2 hours on Assisted, 8 hours on Managed). We start with a review of your current IT and a project plan with a timeline and who is responsible for what. You put the controls in place, we check your application, and then you submit it.

The Plus scan covers up to 16 external IP addresses and testing on up to 10 sample devices, at one location, for one type of user account. The scheme may require more devices to be tested.
What is the pass guarantee, and what are its conditions?
The guarantee depends on you putting the required controls in place and sending us your application to check before your first submission. We run a precheck. If we approve your answers and the first submission still fails, we explain what to change.
If you make the changes and resubmit within two days and still do not pass, we cover the cost of repeating basic Cyber Essentials certification. The guarantee covers basic Cyber Essentials, not Plus.
Insurance is limited to eligible UK organisations and has exclusions and an excess.

What is Cyber Essentials?

IASME, the certification body, offers £25,000 of cyber insurance to UK organisations with a turnover under £20 million that certify their whole organisation and opt in, subject to its terms and exclusions.
